Allwyn Takes the Reins of the UK National Lottery from Camelot

Di Grayson "Gizmo" Welch

The global gaming giant, Allwyn, has formally assumed control of the United Kingdom’s National Lottery, succeeding Camelot. This takeover signifies the conclusion of Camelot’s tenure, the firm that had overseen the UK National Lottery since its commencement in 1994.

Formerly under the ownership of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Camelot initially opposed the shift and even contested the Gambling Commission’s determination to grant the fourth National Lottery license to Allwyn. Nevertheless, following a string of legal disputes, Allwyn prevailed.

Despite the early discord, Allwyn has indicated that Camelot’s leadership structure will be retained, guaranteeing a seamless handover. This action is anticipated to capitalize on the expertise of Camelot’s personnel while introducing a fresh era for the UK National Lottery under Allwyn’s guidance.

The unexpected announcement of Allwyn’s intention to purchase Camelot UK, the operator of the UK National Lottery, from its parent company, LS Group, caught many off guard. This followed an unforeseen series of events in which Camelot, after failing to secure the bid for the subsequent National Lottery license against Allwyn, attempted to retain its existing license.

Early in 2023, the UK Gambling Commission sanctioned Allwyn’s acquisition of Camelot UK, facilitating a seamless transfer of authority. Robert Chvátal, Allwyn’s CEO, stated that incorporating Camelot would “help to guarantee a seamless progression from the third to the fourth license and will unite the combined proficiency and technical expertise of two highly seasoned lottery operators.”
