Australia Tightens Reins on Gaming Sector with Crown Resorts Roadmap and New Compliance Standards

The Land Down Under is strengthening its grip on its gaming sector.

The New South Wales gaming watchdog, the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA), has provided Crown Resorts with a roadmap to reopen its Sydney gaming establishment by late April. This development follows a finding that the company was unsuitable to hold a casino permit after a scathing investigation spearheaded by retired NSW Supreme Court Justice, Patricia Bergin. ILGA head Philip Crawford emphasized that the responsibility lies solely with Crown to demonstrate its reformation, and that the regulatory body is obligated to collaborate with the company on the inquiry’s suggestions.

This shift toward increased responsibility extends beyond Crown Resorts. Senet, an Australian consulting firm specializing in gaming regulations and adherence, has unveiled the introduction of new compliance accreditations – Senet Assure and Senet Assure Premium – intended to safeguard both businesses and patrons from gaming-related harm and financial crimes. This choice follows the Crown Resorts probe and cautions from the NSW Crime Commission regarding potential risks to Australia’s financial system.

Paul Newson, a regulatory and gaming specialist at Senet, highlighted that attaining these certifications will be challenging. Only businesses exhibiting the highest levels of diligence will meet the criteria. He views it as a mechanism for industry frontrunners to demonstrate their commitment to responsible gaming, exceeding expectations to shield customers and staff and nurturing a culture of conformity and social accountability.
