National Lottery License Hangs in the Balance as Camelot and IGT Appeal High Court Ruling
13.06.2024
Allwyn UKs head, Justin King, voiced his frustration regarding the recent turn of events concerning the granting of the fourth National Lottery permit.
The UK Gambling Commission (GC) revealed yesterday that the automatic stay, which prohibited them from officially awarding the license to Allwyn, was lifted by the High Court on June 29th, 2022. However, in a move that has disheartened King, both Camelot and IGT have contested this ruling, an action that has been granted by the High Court. This signifies the suspension remains until the appeals process is finalized.
The appeal hearing is anticipated to occur during the week of September 12th. In their most recent announcement, the GC reiterated their position throughout this legal proceeding, affirming they have “consistently maintained that disrupting the execution of Allwyn’s proposals could lead to substantial repercussions for the National Lottery and charitable organizations.”
“We are disheartened by this result,” remarked King. “This generates further postponement and ambiguity, as the appeal will not be addressed until September. It is now unavoidable that charities will experience losses due to this holdup.”
“Camelot and IGT are now obligated to furnish security for costs by 4 pm on Friday, as mandated by the court,” he finished.
We strongly encouraged them to guarantee the updated strategy serves the people or respectfully embrace Judge O’Farrell’s ruling to benefit the National Lottery. Such action would remove the current hold and permit the Lottery Commission to proceed with granting the next license to Allwyn.
