ACMA Cracks Down on Illegal Online Casinos Targeting Australians
12.06.2024
The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) recently issued its initial official caution to a software provider known as Proxous Advanced Solutions.
The problem? Proxous purportedly furnished software to 13 separate internet casinos that were illicitly providing services to Australians. These casinos were utilizing Proxous’ “Real Time Gaming” (RTG) software. The ACMA contends that Proxous was aware these casinos were violating Australian law, particularly the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.
The ACMA had previously scrutinized these casinos: Fair Go Casino, Two Up Casino, Free Spin, BoVegas, Uptown Pokies, Uptown Aces, Red Dog Casino, Slots Empire, Cherry Gold Casino, Play Croco, Aussie Play, Ozwin Casino, and Reels Of Joy. Each and every one was operating unlawfully in Australia.
Because these online casinos depended on Proxous’ software, the ACMA is taking measures to block them. They’ve been active as well – since 2017, they assert to have driven more than 170 illegal gambling websites out of the Australian market.
The ACMA wants Australians to understand that simply because a gambling site *appears* legitimate, doesn’t mean it is. They caution that these sites frequently lack fundamental consumer safeguards.
The ACMA, Australia’s media regulator, has not issued any official warnings to businesses for “participating in unlawful wagering activities by supplying software.”
Despite this, they are taking a hard line against illicit internet gambling. They just introduced BetStop, a new self-exclusion list. This initiative enables players to prohibit themselves from accessing all authorized online gambling platforms for a period of at least three months.
