ACMA Targets Software Supplier in Crackdown on Illegal Online Gambling in Australia
11.06.2024
The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) has issued its initial official caution to a technology vendor known as Proxous Advanced Solutions.
The regulatory body found that thirteen unlawful internet gaming platforms, all providing services to Australians, were utilizing Proxous’ live gaming software, particularly their RTG branded offerings.
The ACMA asserts that Proxous intentionally granted access to their software to these gaming platforms, a direct breach of Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.
Prior inquiries by the ACMA had already verified that all thirteen operators were illicitly targeting Australian patrons. These operators encompassed recognizable names such as Fair Go Casino, Two Up Casino, and others like BoVegas, Uptown Pokies, and Red Dog Casino. The complete roster also included Slots Empire, Cherry Gold Casino, Play Croco, Aussie Play, Ozwin Casino, and Reels Of Joy.
The ACMA stressed that these operators heavily depended on Proxous’ software to operate their “internet casino-style services” and affirmed that measures have been implemented to restrict these websites within Australia.
This action is noteworthy as it signifies the first instance of the ACMA taking action against a software supplier, rather than solely the operators themselves. This conveys a firm message to the sector. The ACMA reminded the public that over 170 illegal gambling services have ceased operations in Australia since they commenced enforcing stricter regulations in 2017. They encouraged consumers to exercise prudence, stating that even if an online gambling service appears legitimate, it’s vital to ascertain if it possesses the required licenses and consumer safeguards.
The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) gave its initial formal caution to a business for “participation in unlawful overseas wagering” via software supply.
This move follows the ACMA’s unveiling of BetStop, a novel nationwide self-ban registry. BetStop will empower players to restrict themselves from every authorized internet betting service for a period of no less than three months.
